Top Tips for Summer Recycling

With summer round the corner, it can be easy to forego recycling while you’re enjoying the sun. However, it’s important to keep recycling all the time to look after the environment! Here are some great tips for some low-effort, high impact summer recycling.

Keep filling your compost bin

Summer is an ideal time for taking care of your garden, and having a good compost pile means that you’ll have a free source of high quality fertiliser! Any food scraps you may have are ideal for chucking in, and will rot down to make sure you have lots of lovely plant food ready to use on your garden.

Recycle glass & plastic

Sitting in the summer sun will probably mean you’re drinking more, whether that’s water in the heat or alcohol round a BBQ. Whether it comes in a glass or plastic bottle though, make sure to recycle it appropriately. These items can take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill, but are easily recycled.

Have a clothing clear-out

Clearing out your wardrobe to buy new summer clothes? Getting rid of the ones you didn’t wear in summer? Make sure you donate them to a charity shop or shelter if they’re in good condition. If not, you could always take them to a textile bank.

Don’t over-buy for your BBQ

If you’re planning on having a barbeque with your family or friends, you obviously need to buy food to cook on it, but it’s important to try and only buy as much food as you think you’ll need. Buying too much food can lead to food wastage. Not only will this waste your money, it is bad for the environment! If you do happen to over-buy, make sure you either use the food at a later date or recycle it.

Don’t litter!

This is an all-round good rule for any time of the year, but it may be more likely that you’re going out for a picnic somewhere in the nice weather! If you are, make sure to try and pack as much of your food in reusable containers to reduce waste (and save you money!). You should also take bags with you to make sure that you take any rubbish from your picnic with you.
